Rev. Maren C. Tirabassi

I am delighted to provide a reference for Peter Johnston as he approaches the culmination of his wandering journey to ordained ministry. He will be a gift to a local congregation in this capacity as he has been in so many roles. He brings a unique set of practical skills along with his profound love of scripture and willingness to struggle with theology as it actually impacts the lives of church members.

And we have been friends for a very long time.

Peter has served the local church and the larger church as sacred musician, Youth Consultant, Christian Educator and Administrator. In all these roles his approach was more pastoral than anyone else I have met in these capacities. Peter always looked beyond the task or event (even the simplest church rental when he was an administrator), to the needs, hopes, doubts or yearnings of individuals and the health of the small community involved. Bringing these gifts with the Biblical and theological advantages of Boston University School of Theology will sustain a local congregation and will be a catalyst for church growth as well. Peter knows the local church inside out and he loves it, in spite of the odd quirks and foibles of congregational life that often challenge more unexperienced seminarians. Knowing and loving are both so important. He can respond to church conflict with clarity and obvious care and can see the kernel of a creative idea in a committee member’s meandering conversation. His understanding and outreach for the unchurched – honed with adolescents and music-lovers – now extends to all.

Peter Johnston’s ministry will be grace for the churches he will serve as an ordained pastor. I celebrate both his roundabout journey and this blessed conclusion.

Peace,
