Rev. Leanne S. Walt

I first met Peter Johnston while serving as Pastoral Resident for Turnaround Ministry at Wollaston Congregational Church, where Peter served as both Administrator and Minister of Music.I was delighted when Peter shared his decision to respond to God’s call to ordained ministry and enter Boston University School of Theology. Since that time, I have enjoyed watching him evolve in his studies and assume pastoral authority and identity in his field work. Not only is Peter’s enthusiasm for ministry and love for the church unparalleled, but he also he possesses exceptional gifts for parish ministry.

As I worked with Peter in his role as Minister of Music, I observed that he brings sensitivity and abiding faith to his involvement in worship planning and musical offerings in worship. Peter has a profound and seasoned understanding of the liturgical year and always aims to select liturgically and thematically appropriate music. Moreover, Peter is able to move souls through his music during worship because each song he sings is heartfelt and faith-filled. This is particularly apparent on those spirit-led occasions when Peter offers an anthem for the congregation, perhaps while strumming on his guitar or gracefully floating his fingers over piano keys.

Peter brings this same authenticity of faith to his preaching. I have witnessed Peter lead a monthly worship service at a local Nursing Home. As he is commissioned to do so, Peter offers communion and breaks open the Word for this community on the first Sunday of each month. Through the thoughtful and comforting words that he offers them it is apparent that Peter has a deep commitment and call to serve this community.

I remain impressed by Peter’s profound understanding of congregational dynamics and pastoral leadership. Peter comes from a family full of pastors and after spending years working in a number of local congregations in varying capacities; he has gleaned insight into different models of pastoral leadership. Because of his experience in the local church, Peter always

makes thoughtful and perceptive contributions to staff and congregational committee meetings. He is attune to pastoral boundaries and maintains confidentiality.

Peter is a compassionate, thoughtful man who has a hearty and refreshing sense of humor – a necessity for any minister. The congregation that calls him will undoubtedly benefit from his exemplary faith and depth of experience in serving United Church of Christ congregations. I am excited to see where God is leading Peter.
